Argentina offers to host the Copa America alone instead of co-organizing with Colombia

Argentina offered on Tuesday to host the 2021 Copa America alone, instead of jointly organizing with Colombia, due to disturbances in the latter since last April. The tournament is being held in two countries for the first time in its 105-year history, and protests in Colombia have resulted in the deaths of at least 15 people. The tournament is due to kick off in Buenos Aires on June 13th. Colombia will host 15 matches, including the final in Barranquilla, on July 10, while Argentina will host 13 matches. Argentine President Alberto Fernandez told CONMEBOL that his country was ready to host the entire tournament if the situation in Colombia did not stabilize. He added to Radio 10: “If there is a problem, we are ready to host the Copa America alone, but the protocols must be very strict,” adding: “If CONMEBOL gives us this responsibility, we are ready to study the matter.”
