Barty advances to the third round at Wimbledon at the expense of Blinkova
World number one Ashleigh Barty advanced to the third round of the Wimbledon tennis tournament by defeating Russian Anna Plinkova 6-4, 6-3 on Thursday. The top seed did not face any significant threat against 89th seed Plinkova, but the Australian did not rise easily either. Her serve betrayed her at times, one of her strongest weapons as she committed 9 double faults and was broken 3 times, while Barty’s 33 unforced errors indicate that she still needs to focus more on grass. Barty, who won her only major title at the French Open in 2019, has never made it past the round of 16 at Wimbledon. But she was ultimately more powerful than Blinkova to seal victory in an hour and 30 minutes after the Russian had sent a forehand wide.
