Benzema’s knee injury .. and the coach of the French national team comments

Striker Karim Benzema was replaced after sustaining a knee injury in the first half of France’s friendly against Bulgaria in preparation for the European Championship, on Tuesday. The Real Madrid striker left the field four minutes before the break after falling ill after a header. Benzema, who returned last week to the France squad after a five-year absence from the national team, remained on the bench after being treated by the world champions’ medical team. “It’s a bruise on the knee, which also affects the muscles,” France coach Didier Deschamps told TF1 television. “He felt pain and asked to be replaced.” Benzema, who was playing his second game for France after an absence of more than five years, was injured in the 41st minute, and coach Didier Deschamps said he did not want to risk the Real Madrid striker. Substitute Olivier Giroud took advantage of the period he played well, to score a double and lead the world champion France to a 3-0 friendly victory over Bulgaria in his last preparatory match for the European Football Championship. France will start its European Championship campaign against Germany in Munich, next Tuesday, before facing Hungary and Portugal, the European champions, in Group F. Five thousand spectators attended the match, nearly eight months after the last match France played in front of fans against Portugal.
