China’s Yang wins first gold at Tokyo Olympics in shooting
Chinese athlete Yang Qian became the first gold medalist at the Tokyo Olympics after winning the 10m air rifle shooting title on Saturday.
Yang set an Olympic record with 251.8 points, while Russia’s Anastasia Galashina took second place, and the bronze medal went to Swiss Nina Christen.
Galachina led the race for the gold medal until the last round, before collapsing under pressure, scoring 8.9 points, her lowest score throughout the competition, reaching 251.1 points in the end.
Yang responded by scoring 9.8 points in the last attempt to clinch the gold medal and set an Olympic record.
Norway’s Chanet Heig Dostad set an Olympic record in qualifying with 632.9 points, but later failed to win a medal.
