Diaz and Guardiola named the best player and coach in the Premier League awards
Manchester City coach Ruben Diaz and Pep Guardiola have been chosen as the best player and coach in the English Premier League for the 2020/21 season. The British news agency “BA Media” reported that Diaz played a decisive role in Manchester City’s crowning the league title after joining the team from the Portuguese team Benfica last September, in addition to helping Guardiola’s men win the League Cup and reach the Champions League final. Diaz, 24, assisted in 32 matches in which he participated in 15 clean sheets for his team. He made 35 correct interceptions and 24 correct obstructions. He was able to block shots 23 times, and managed to recover the ball 135 times. Last month, he was named the Football Writers Association’s Player of the Year, and is also among the PFA’s nominees for Player of the Year. Diaz won the League League award, ahead of teammate Kevin De Bruyne, who won it last year, Bruno Fernandes, Jack Grealish, Harry Kane, Mason Mount, Mohamed Salah and Thomas Suchek. Guardiola, whose team finished the season 12 points ahead of runner-up Manchester United, won the coach of the year award for the third time, having previously won the award on two occasions when he led Manchester City to crown the league title in the 2017/2018 and 2018/2019 seasons. The other candidates were Manchester United coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Leicester City coach Brendan Rogers, West Ham coach David Moyes and Leeds coach Marcelo Bielsa.
