El-Shennawy shines, and Egypt seizes a precious “Olympic” point from Spain
Egypt scored a valuable point from Spain, after their 0-0 draw in Sapporo, on Thursday, in the opening of the third group football competitions in the Tokyo Olympics, which officially opens on Friday.
And the football competition for players under 23, with the exception of 3 over this age, did not attract many stars of the round, due to the crowded agenda and its launch after the conclusion of the European Cup and the “Copa America”.
Egypt coach Shawky Gharib put in a squad in which he relied on goalkeeper Mohamed El-Shennawy, defenders Ahmed Hegazy and Mahmoud Hamdi “Al-Wensh” and striker Ramadan Sobhi.
On the other hand, Spain pushed 6 players from the last European Cup, reaching the semi-finals and going out against the champion Italy on penalties, most notably the young Barcelona midfielder Pedri.
Spain controlled the ball relatively at the beginning of the match without posing a threat to El-Shennawy’s goal.
But it was hit by two slaps in the first half, after Barcelona defender Oscar Mingiza and midfielder Dani Ceballos, who hit the post in the 27th minute, were injured.
In the second half, the Spanish team looked closer to the goal, but El-Shennawy defended his goal skillfully.
El-Shennawy became the second Egyptian goalkeeper to compete in the World Cup and Olympics, after Mustafa Kamel Mansour in the 1934 World Cup and the 1936 Berlin Olympics.
And she plays later in the same group, Argentina, the 2004 and 2008 champions, and the fourth Australia in 1992.
