Serena Williams withdraws from Wimbledon
American veteran Serena Williams, who is seeking to win her 24th major title during her match against Belarusian Aleksandra Sasnovich, withdrew 3-3 in the first set of Wimbledon on Tuesday due to an injury to her right thigh. The American, who will turn 40 in September, was unable to complete the match and left the field in tears. Serena was hoping to achieve her 24th Grand Slam title and equal the record for Australian Margaret Court after failing in her last 4 Grand Slam finals (Wimbledon and Flushing Meadows in 2018 and 2019), but she has to wait for a major tournament in the future. It is the first time that Serena, the 8-time English champion, has withdrawn during a match in a Grand Slam since the price of the Wimbledon final in 1998 against Spain’s Arancha Sanchez.
